Taxi

Taxis are convenient and affordable in Singapore. You can flag one down on most roads, but not in the downtown area. Taxi stands are available outside most major shopping malls, public buildings, MRT stations, etc.. In the downtown area, you have to wait for taxis at the taxi stands. Available taxis usually show a green light on the roof of the taxi. Unavailable/booked taxis show a red light, or are not lighted up. You may also get a taxi by calling 6-DIAL CAB (63425222), which automatically dials several taxi companies until one responds.

All taxis are metered. Taxi rates vary a little, depending on the vehicle types and taxi companies, but not substantially. Singapore taxi drivers are, generally speaking, honest, but do insist that they turn on the meter if they don't. More information is available here.

Singapore has an extensive public transportation system, consisting of MRT (subways) and buses. During the rush hours, MRT is often the most efficient means of traveling. More information is available here.
